Sudan: Zamzam Displacement Site Under Attack
The Zamzam camp in North Darfur, home to nearly half a million displaced people, has come under heavy attack by the Rapid Support Forces since last night. The situation on the ground is dire and chaotic: patients and medical staff are fleeing for their lives.
Just yesterday, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams received 8 injured people, including women and children as young as 4 years old with severe injuries such as chest trauma and fractures. Today, the facility had to be evacuated. Four critically injured patients were transferred to another facility this morning, just before new shelling broke out near the hospital.
Michel-Olivier Lacharité, MSF’s Head of Emergency Operations, describes the dire situation: “Not only have people been starving, but they are also now being bombarded and forced to flee again. We're concerned about their safety, including our staff, and we urgently call for the protection of patients, civilians, medical teams and health facilities, in Zamzam Camp. Safe passage must also be guaranteed for those escaping this violence”.
MSF is one of the few international aid organizations still operating in Sudan. Since the war began 18 months ago, the country has faced one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time. A large portion of the country’s medical facilities have been destroyed or are completely overwhelmed.
Due to ongoing conflict, MSF was forced to temporarily halt the treatment of thousands of malnourished children in the ZamsZm camp in October. The delivery of food, medical supplies, and other life-saving goods has been systematically blocked by warring parties, further worsening the crisis.
MSF calls for urgent action to ensure the safety of civilians, patients, and humanitarian workers in the Zamzam camp and across Sudan.
